...but we can see it from here.

Yes, Burnadebt is still trying to grow roots. Something is glitching in the transmission so we are wandering as best as we can. This last week we put some miles on the Jeep and our 1927 hot rod. To celebrate one of the kid's birthdays we spent a few days in nearby Wintergreen, Virginia. We didn't do much as the fog was thick and we are too old for that nonsense...but the kids hiked every day and survived. Mostly we just ate a lot, played games, and used a real bathroom and kitchen. I was afraid it would make me miss sticks and bricks living but not a chance. I couldn't wait to get back to Burnadebt and cozy up with Bob in our space overlooking the donkeys.

Meanwhile, we are planning regular day trips until we can get back on the road. If you recall from our last post that we are leaving it to the fates to choose our destination. Fate decided on Chippokes State Park. Chippokes is a real hidden gem of Virginia. It is one of the oldest continuous working farms in the USA since 1619; nestled against Cobham Bay on the James River.

The beach at Chippokes is known for lots of fossils and shark's teeth; but we didn't find any teeth, unfortunately. Beachcombing is one of our favorite activities it truly takes the sunsetting or Bob getting a headache to make us call it a day. We found some bones, stones, fossils, lots of iron bog, and a pottery shard.

The fun at Chippokes doesn't stop at the beach. They have a farm full of animals, house tours (which were closed while we were there), hiking trails, and an education center with classes. We even met another donkey that was happy to say hi!

I almost forgot the Chippokes Farm & Forestry Museum. We love antiques, machines, and history; this collection takes guests down memory lane from the earliest methods of collecting cotton and peanuts, and animal processing all the way to homemaker goodies like this old Singer sewing machine. I got pretty excited about the sewing machine as I have one nearly like it that is just waiting for me to sit down and get her back to work. Bob eagerly jumped on the old tractor and made him thankful for the new cushioned seats on the modern machines.

And our last stop, Powhatan State Park. We were lucky enough to catch a few hours of sunshine and take out our hot rod. Powhatan SP has an amazing sample of Virginia flora and landscape. We planned out "wheelchair" accessible paths with the ranger and will be doing regular wanderings as Spring takes full bloom. For more adventurous travelers, Powhatan SP is also located on the James River and primitive camping is available from the boat launch.

But wait! Back at the farm signs of Spring are coming in strong. The bees and donkeys are getting friendly. The vultures are coming in for water. And thank the gods we had to turn on the AC for an afternoon. I do wonder how long before the heat and insects have us reminiscing about our cold days and freezing nights. Stay posted for more adventures next week!
