We took a day this week to explore the Petersburg National Battlefield, one of our goals in the upcoming years is to fill in our National Parks Passport Book. This is our second stop using the passport as a guide to our destinations. Our first stop in Jamestown/Yorktown is where we fell in love with the idea of wandering the USA to get our book stamped.

As we made our way through the traffic and questionable side streets we knew we were at the park when the concrete roads and street lights turned into hiking paths and pine trees. We learned quickly from the ranger at the visitor center that one day wasn't enough so keep an eye out as we make our way through Petersburg's history.

We also learned that many men can come up with the same bad idea as we learned about the Battle of the Crater. Even in the 1860s people forgot to keep their egos in check when they took too much time to give themselves a pat on the back. As history buffs, we definitely want to understand more about their thinking.

I really don't know how we didn't know about this particular battle...Melanie knows ridiculous historical facts about the Richmond area and this should have been one of them.

In any case, scroll on to see us goofing around the battlefield with the baby person.
